The village's Friday drinks

On Friday afternoons Broek in Waterland pulls up a stool for a drink that starts when the working week stops and only ends when Jeppe turns off the lights (or back on). No cocktail bar, no reservation, no dress code — just a bar where you walk in and strike up a conversation with the person next to you. The bar is packed, the courtyard is buzzing and the team pours as if their lives depended on it (which, a little, they do).
On Saturdays the drinks start at ten in the morning and end at midnight. On Sundays it’s just as busy, but we wrap things up a little earlier. No rush, no programme, no planning.
The drinks menu is short and good. Beer on tap, wine from our own selection, a negroni if you dare & a soft drink for whoever’s driving.
The Saturday
From 10:00. Until the last light goes out.
The Saturday starts quietly. Coffee on the terrace, the newspaper or nothing — it doesn’t matter. Around midday Broek pulls up a chair: a toastie, a bowl of soup, something off the chalkboard. Prams by the door, a dog under the table, someone who’s just been for a walk and only wanted a beer, but stays anyway for the bitterballen.
Towards five o’clock the mood shifts. The drinks slide into dinner, the candles are lit, and Mette walks just a touch faster. At the bar sit people who aren’t going to dine but have no intention of leaving either. At the tables sit couples, families and groups of friends from Amsterdam who’ve discovered the village and don’t want to go back. Somewhere between the mains and the last round it turns midnight. And then everyone cycles home — except whoever’s sleeping in the B&B.

The Sunday
Leftovers day. Family day. No rush day.
Sunday is different. No dinner, no crowds, no programme. But the whole village on the terrace when the sun’s out, children running around the courtyard, and the sound of someone asking for the third time whether there’s any apple pie left.
Sunday is different again. Fridges empty, and off we go. That means: whatever’s left over from the week ends up on your plate. Sometimes soup, sometimes a stew, sometimes whatever the kitchen fancies. No fixed menu, but always something warm. Alongside it a glass of wine or a Texels on tap, lemonade from Roze Bunker for whoever’s driving, and a Broekerglaasje for anyone taking it easy. At eight the door closes. Not because we have to, but because Sunday has to end sometime. See you next week.
